8/24/2021 0 Comments HummingbirdsThe a few of the unidentified plants have bloomed and thanks to their blossoms, colors and a few visiting hummingbirds, we now know what they are! Cardinal flowers! We may have had to take in our feeders, but its clear the hummingbirds are just as happy with this natural food source!

7/28/2020 0 Comments Growing FastOur caterpillars are growing up fast. Almost all of them have already formed their chrysallis. In just a couple of weeks (maybe sooner?) we'll be releasing butterflies into the garden.
7/21/2020 0 Comments Caterpillars have ARRIVED!While our new garden at the moment is too young (and too chewed) to support pollinators, doesn't mean that other areas of the library grounds aren't thriving. So we will be doing our annual butterfly release. We purchased extras this year to make the release special. So we will be releasing a possible total of 24 butterflies if all goes well. So yesterday our caterpillars finally arrived, you can stop by the library to watch their growth or follow them on Facebook or here in the Garden blog But this year we've done something special. As part of the Greening program we purchased an additional 30 butterflies for kids to take one home. During our Butterfly Dance program (click Activities to register for this event) you will learn to make a butterfly house and have a caterpillar to take home with you. Any butterflies that don't get homes, will be added to the library's own butterfly release. The date will be announced based on butterfly emergence so keep an eye out for that date. 6/25/2020 0 Comments We Have Pollinators!Hummingbirds are pollinators, they often pickup a little pollen as they search flowers for nectar. As we don't have any flowering plants right now, a feeder is a good way to bring pollinators into your yard. It helps support them with food and hopefully they'll take an interest in the flowers when they bloom. Having feeders in your gardens is also a great way to view wildlife! Currently we have two ruby throated hummingbirds visiting our feeders. This one is female, the other we're not sure of yet. |
This project was made possible in part by a grant from the RI Office of Library and Information Services using funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
